How to Prepare for a Golden Circle Tour
A little preparation makes a Golden Circle day far more comfortable. Iceland's weather is famously changeable, so the trick is layers, waterproofs and grippy shoes.
Dress in layers
The single best rule for Iceland is to dress in layers you can add and shed as the day changes. Start with a warm base layer, add an insulating mid-layer such as fleece or wool, and finish with a waterproof, windproof outer shell. Cotton that soaks and stays wet is the thing to avoid; wool and synthetics keep you warm even when damp. Even in summer, the wind at Gullfoss can be cold, so a proper jacket earns its place year round.
Footwear
Comfortable, waterproof shoes with good grip are worth more than any other single item. The lower path at Gullfoss and the boardwalks by the Geysir field can be wet, and in winter they ice over. Sturdy trainers are fine in summer; in winter, waterproof boots with grip, and optional slip-on ice cleats, make the difference between enjoying the stops and picking your way gingerly.
What to pack
A short list covers most days:
- Waterproof jacket and warm layers
- Hat and gloves — essential in winter, useful in summer
- Swimsuit and towel if a lagoon is on your tour
- Refillable water bottle — the tap water is glacial and excellent
- Snacks, and some cash or a card for cafes and parking
- A camera or phone, plus a power bank for cold days that drain batteries
Summer versus winter days
A summer Golden Circle day is easy: long daylight, mild temperatures and straightforward driving. A winter day is shorter and more weather-dependent — sights may be visited in twilight, roads can be icy, and plans sometimes shift for safety. Neither is worse; they are different trips. The seasons page compares them in detail.
If you are self-driving
Drivers should check road.is for conditions and safetravel.is for alerts before setting out, keep the fuel tank topped up, and never stop on the road for photos — use the marked car parks. A four-wheel drive gives useful margin in winter. If the forecast looks rough, a guided tour with an experienced driver is the safer call.
Health and comfort
Bring any personal medication, sun protection for bright summer days, and a little patience with the weather, which can deliver sun, wind and rain within an hour. Well prepared, a Golden Circle day is comfortable in any season. See the visiting guide for timings and the tours list to pick your day out.
Cold-weather electronics and comfort
Cold drains phone and camera batteries fast, so carry a power bank and keep spare batteries in an inside pocket where your body heat keeps them alive. Condensation can fog a lens when you move between cold air and a warm bus, so give gear a minute to adjust. The roads on the southern arc of the loop wind gently; travellers prone to motion sickness are more comfortable in a front seat with an eye on the horizon.
Timing and food
Full days run long — six to eleven hours depending on the tour — so eat a proper breakfast and carry snacks and water, even though there are cafes at the main stops. In winter, build in extra time and keep plans flexible, since weather can slow the day. A little slack in the schedule is the difference between a relaxed day and a stressful one, whichever season you travel in.
